Some basics

Some of the most common reasons why computers or the internet slows down is due to having too many processes running at the same time.  Having multiple applications running and many pages open in the browser can slow your computer down.   The best way to keep your computer running fast is only open what is needed to complete the tasks you are working on.

A computer will work better if it is given time to completely start.

When you start up your computer, give it time to load completely.  This means, do not start clicking on keys, mouse or touch screen for a minute or two.  It rarely takes longer than a couple minutes but you can always look in the bottom right corner to see if you see all the icons – especially the wireless icon that will look like a small radar signal.  Once your profile and apps load, you are ready to get that schoolwork done!

SLOW DOWN

IT'S NOT ALWAYS
THE INTERNET
ALWAYS

Often we think the internet is causing problems – it is not always the internet.

When you are submitting answers on learning websites such as Galileo you may run into issues waiting for your answers to submit or move on to the next question.  Be patient.  Most of the time there are thousands of students accessing these sites at the same time.  The learning site can become overloaded with incoming data.  Do not submit your answers over and over.  Doing this will freeze up your browser and cause you to have to restart your computer.

Also, look back at the first tip… do you need to close some apps or web pages?

IT'S TIME TO RESTART

Often computers freeze or quit working right.

Sometimes the best solution is to restart your computer.  Problems such as the mouse or track pad not working right, a program stops loading or maybe you cannot get an internet connection at school or at home, can be resolved by a restart of your computer.  HOWEVER, AND THIS IS IMPORTANT – you do not want to continually restart or do a restart while your computer is in the starting process.   This can damage the computer – (contact tech support if a couple restarts do not help).  Again, patience will pay off as the system restarts and loads all the necessary apps.

How to restart

BE CAREFUL OF WHAT YOU CLICK ON OR OPEN

Never open an email unless you know who sent it!  VERY IMPORTANT – neve click on a link in an email unless you know who sent it.

Hackers and spammers are on a continuous quest to get into your computer or to get personal information from you. BE VERY CAREFUL AND TAKE TIME to know what you are clicking on in your emails and websites you visit.

~Doing this will help you avoid people that want to do you harm.
